Beryllium copper is a copper base alloy in the supersaturated solid solution state. It is a non-ferrous alloy with good physical, chemical, mechanical and corrosion resistance. After solid solution and effective treatment, it has the same strength limit, elastic limit, yield limit and fatigue limit as special steel, and also has high conductivity, thermal conductivity, high hardness and wear resistance, high creep resistance and corrosion resistance, It is widely used in the manufacturing of various mold inserts, replacing the molds with high precision and complex shapes made of steel, die-casting machines, injection molding machine punches, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant workpieces, welding electrode materials, etc. Beryllium copper tape is used in battery computer plug-ins, micro electric brushes, mobile phones, various switch contacts, washers, diaphragms, springs, clips, etc. It is one of the most indispensable industrial materials in the national economic construction. Beryllium copper has high strength and hardness, and excellent process performance. Although the tensile strength reaches 120Kg/mm2, the elongation can still reach 9-20%, the bending angle is 90 °, and the bending R/T ratio is 1. Especially, the stress relaxation resistance and heat treatment performance are remarkable. It can still maintain more than 85% of the initial stress after 1000 hours of exposure to high temperature. Different grades of beryllium copper alloys can be obtained by heat treatment.
The heat treatment of beryllium copper is different from the principle of homogeneous texture of iron and steel, but the theory that solute atoms are enriched into hardened regions. The alloy must have a solubility change that is significantly different between high temperature and room temperature. The solubility at high temperature is rapidly cooled to remain at the time temperature through the following process: concentration segregation zone GP (I) – solute atom ordering GP (II) – formation of transition phase – formation of equilibrium phase
- Density 8.3g/cm
- Hardness ≥ 36-42HRC
- Conductivity ≥ 18% IACS
- Tensile strength ≥ 1000mPa
- Thermal conductivity ≥ 105w/m.k20 ℃
Beryllium copper is an alloy with good mechanical, physical and chemical properties. After quenching and tempering, it has high strength, elasticity, wear resistance, fatigue resistance and heat resistance. At the same time, it also has high conductivity, thermal conductivity, cold resistance and non magnetism. It has no spark when hit, and is easy to weld and braze. It has excellent corrosion resistance in atmosphere, fresh water and sea water. Corrosion resistance rate of beryllium copper alloy in seawater: (1.1-1.4) × 10-2mm/year. Corrosion depth: (10.9-13.8) × 10-3mm/year. After corrosion, the strength and elongation do not change, so it can remain in the water for more than 40 years. It is an irreplaceable material for submarine cable repeater structure. In sulfuric acid medium: the annual corrosion depth is 0.0012-0.1175 mm in sulfuric acid with concentration less than 80% (room temperature), and the corrosion is slightly accelerated when the concentration is greater than 80%.
High performance beryllium copper mainly focuses on various working conditions of nonferrous metal low-pressure and gravity casting dies. Through in-depth research on the internal relationship between the failure reason, composition and resistance to liquid metal corrosion of beryllium bronze die materials, a high-performance beryllium bronze die material with high conductivity (heat), high strength, wear resistance, high temperature resistance, high toughness and resistance to liquid metal corrosion has been developed, which has solved the problem that domestic nonferrous metal low-pressure and gravity casting dies are easy to crack It is easy to wear and other problems, which significantly improves the die life, demoulding speed and casting strength; The adhesion and corrosion of molten metal slag on the die are overcome; The surface quality of the casting was improved; The production cost is reduced; The service life of the die is close to the import level. Wonder high-performance beryllium copper has a hardness of HRC43, a density of 8.3g/cm3, and a beryllium content of 1.9% – 2.15%. It is widely used in plastic injection molding mold inserts, mold cores, die-casting punches, hot runner cooling systems, heat transfer nozzles, integral cavities of blow molding molds, automobile molds, and wear plates
Beryllium copper is divided into two categories. According to alloy composition, beryllium copper with high conductivity (electric and thermal) is 0.2% ~ 0.6%; The beryllium content of 1.6%~2.0% is high-strength beryllium copper. According to the manufacturing process, it can be divided into cast beryllium copper and deformed beryllium copper. C is the most popular beryllium bronze alloy in the world. Deformed beryllium copper includes C17000, C17200 (high-strength beryllium bronze) and C17500 (high conductivity beryllium bronze). The corresponding cast beryllium copper includes C82000, C82200 (high conductivity cast beryllium copper) and C82400, C82500, C82600, C82800 (high-strength wear-resistant cast beryllium copper).
Beryllium copper is a typical aging precipitation strengthening alloy. The typical heat treatment process of high-strength beryllium copper is to keep the temperature at 760-830 ℃ for an appropriate period of time (at least 60min for every 25mm thick plate), so that the solute atom beryllium is fully dissolved in the copper matrix, forming a face centered cubic lattice α Phase supersaturated solid solution. Then, heat preservation at 320~340 ℃ for 2~3h to complete the dissolution precipitation process, forming γ’ Phase (CuBe2 metastable phase). This phase is coherent with the parent body, resulting in a stress field and strengthening the matrix.
The typical heat treatment process of high conductivity beryllium copper is to keep the temperature at 900~950 ℃ for a period of time to complete the solid solution process, and then keep the temperature at 450~480 ℃ for 2~4h to realize the dissolution precipitation process. Due to the addition of more cobalt or nickel in the alloy, the dispersion strengthening particles are mostly intermetallic compounds formed by cobalt or nickel and beryllium. In order to further improve the strength of the alloy, the alloy is often cold worked to a certain extent after the solution heat treatment and before the aging heat treatment, in order to achieve the comprehensive strengthening effect of cold work hardening and age hardening. Its cold workability generally does not exceed 37%. Solution heat treatment shall generally be carried out by the alloy manufacturer. The user will punch the solution heat treated and cold-rolled strip into parts, and then conduct self aging heat treatment to obtain high strength spring components.
In recent years, the United States has also developed the strip with aging heat treatment completed by beryllium copper manufacturers, and customers can directly punch it into parts for use. After various process treatments for beryllium copper, the letters for alloy state in Europe and America are: A means solution annealed state. The alloy is in the softest state and is easy to be formed by stamping. It needs further cold working or direct aging strengthening treatment. H stands for work hardening state. Take cold-rolled sheet as an example, 37% of the cold workability is full hard (H), 21% is semi hard (1/2H), and 11% is 1/4 hard (1/4H). Users can choose the appropriate soft and hard state according to the difficulty of the shape of the parts to be punched. T indicates the aging strengthened heat treatment state. If the process of deformation and aging comprehensive strengthening is adopted, its state is represented by HT.
The mass percentage of beryllium in beryllium copper alloy is 2%, but the atomic percentage is 9.0122%. Beryllium oxide (BeO) is formed during high-temperature operations such as smelting, casting, heat treatment, welding, cutting and machining. Most beryllium oxide will firmly adhere to the surface of the original workpiece, but in the fierce movement such as cutting, polishing, welding and other operations, fine particles (less than 10 μ m) The dust will be suspended in the air. If the operator inhales too much, it will cause “beryllium lung” occupational disease. Therefore, the above working environment must have a perfect directional exhaust device. Cutting, polishing and other processes must be carried out in a wet state with coolant. The standard of OSHA in this regard is to conduct regular air sampling for the beryllium product operation workshop and its surrounding environment. For workers who work for 8 hours a day, the beryllium content in their working environment shall not exceed 2 μ g/m3。 In order to reduce the pollution caused by beryllium copper, China and Japan have developed titanium and its elasticity are similar to them in recent years, which can be used as a good substitute material for beryllium bronze in some work occasions.
